Global Word Search

ContentsPreviousNext

Assuming you have successfully installed and configured SearchHTML, you should be able to search an entire document for word matches from the Arexx menu on your browser. This is more powerful than the inbuilt search function of most browsers, which are limited to searching the currently displayed file.

Select your options, enter the target text and click "Search". After a few seconds, the browser should display a Search Report to you. Each matching file may be displayed by clicking the bullet links, where the text of each link is the title of each html file. Weird or incomplete html file titles may produce weird or incomplete links, however will still display the file(s) that matched your search. Here is a typical Search Results report, tested on the GetHelp documentation searching for the word "search":

How does it work?

Global searching is done using a fast executable program called SearchHTML. A temporary html file is created and loaded by your browser. The temporary file is constructed within the same directory as the html files for your document. In GetHelp's case, this will be in Ram:T/Help/{Document name}/. An Arexx script calls SearchHTML.rexx, loads the resultant html file to your browser and handles deletion of the temporary html file.

The SearchHTML program determines the search parameters in a small MUI window (see above), then searches each file for matches. You may select partial matches and whether to check for case matching.

NOTE: The program presently uses a VERY simple search routine which does not attempt to distinguish html code from actual document text. This means that a search for "html" should return matches for each page. "gif" will return matches for each page containing gif images, not necessarily pages that mention the word gif.

Finding word matches on a page

The global word search function will report which pages of your document contains the word(s) you are looking for. Use your browser's document search/find function to highlight those words on your page.
